The first PWW Gives Back Day took place on October 24, with a full day of volunteering by our team members. We worked on trails for Portland Trails in the morning and did beach cleanup for Blue Ocean Society in the afternoon.
“These are the trails and beaches we take our families and pets to, so it’s great that Portland Webworks recognizes and prioritizes the role we can play as stewards in our communities,” says Brett Kana, co-chair of PWW Gives Back committee. “I’m out on these trails all the time with my dog, so I was especially happy to be able to give something back to one of our community’s public resources from which I’ve benefitted so directly.”

Our remote employees also did trail work for Santa Fe Conservation Trust in New Mexico and cleaned up along the Enoree River in Greenville County South Carolina.
“We worked with a local volunteer crew on two sets of trails in Santa Fe, Calabasas and La Piedra,” says digital content manager Melissa Coleman. “Not only will the improvements make the trails safer for hikers and bikers, but we diverted runoff water to prevent erosion.”

“I picked up a LOT of trash and cleared out three small trails/paths to make it easier to get to the river,” says developer Ryan Olsen of his work on the Enoree River. “I also cleared away an awful lot of thorny weeds just to make things more accessible.”

“It was inspiring to join the team outdoors for my first PWW Gives Back day!” says project manager and PWW Gives Back committee co-chair Chelsea Jones. “I greatly appreciated the opportunity to spend a day supporting our shared environment and making connections beyond our remote work.”

PWW Gives Back supports two primary events a year in our community in Portland, Maine and the hometowns of our remote employees around the country.
In May, members of our team supported the Maine Needs on a 3.6 mile walk around the Back Cove and Payson Park to raise funds for basic material goods for individuals and families throughout the state.
The PWW Gives Back committee seeks to build lasting partnerships with local nonprofits, schools, and shelters.
The committee seeks to support a diversity of opportunities that ideally involve:
- Physical activity or other types of individual contribution (cooking, organizing, etc.)
- Fundraising (walk, races, etc)
- Drives, where the contributions are non-monetary (supply drives, etc.)
Our team members are encouraged to suggest events that fit our mission and every idea is reviewed and decisions are shared openly.
