Portland Webworks was approached by Olympia Sports, one of the East Coast’s largest sporting goods retailers, in early 2010 to help develop a completely new web presence. The company’s goal was transitioning away from an aging e-commerce site to develop a new site focused primarily on driving visitors to the company’s retail stores.
During the Project Discovery phase Portland Webworks conducted a thorough evaluation of both Drupal and Liferay in relation to the company’s short and long-term web goals. Through this process it was determined that Drupal offered a more appropriate feature set, as well as a more rapid development process for managing custom content. One of the most important goals for the project was to develop a set of modules that would allow non-technical users to maintain the frequently changing promotional content on the site. This content included weekly sales flyers, affiliate banners, fan competitions and local store data, each with their own set of variables. Additionally the project included integration with the company’s consumer loyalty program, allowing rewards card holders to check their account balances.
The end result has been a dynamic new site that combines distinctive Olympia Sports branding with interactive features, and the latest promotional content. This new store-centered approach has helped significantly in generating traffic to Olympia's retail locations.
