As mobile devices are increasingly used for consumption of web content, the Maine Office of Tourism identified this as an opportunity to deliver information to mobile users and enhance their experience while visiting Maine. As the largest source of activity and accommodation data for the state, VisitMaine.com is the premier resource for Maine visitors, but the dynamic nature and sheer volume of content available does not lend itself well to a native mobile application.
In 2011, the Office of Tourism turned to Portland Webwork to develop a mobile tool that would deliver targeted information to visitors‘ devices during their stay in Maine. Additionally, one of the key objectives for the project was to serve the widest possible audience through a single solution. To meet these goals, Portland Webworks leveraged the Sencha Touch framework to create a mobile-optimized web experience, that uses device location data to provide information on nearby businesses, destinations and events.
The new solution intercepts mobile users to VisitMaine.com and offers users the choice of the full site or the mobile-optimized version, allowing visitors a chance to quickly search for and find nearby destinations, and provide easy access to contact information and driving directions. The site also offers users the chance to view selected videos and picture galleries, offering a complete and responsive Maine experience, all in the palm of their hand.
