Jetspeed 2 Enterprise Portal

Jetspeed is a lightweight, open source enterprise portal developed under the Apache license in Java and XML. Naturally, it leverages many of the other popular Apache web projects, such as the Apache Web server and the Tomcat application server, but it remains highly flexible and capable of living in harmony with your existing IT infrastructure.

Jetspeed will work with almost any Java application server, from JBoss to IBM Websphere, and supports nearly any SQL database, including those from MySQL, Microsoft and Oracle.

While Jetspeed doesn’t come packed with a broad array of standard portlets, it offers a great canvas for developing your own custom JSR-168 abd JSR-268 portlets. In addition to its ability to use Java-based portlets, Jetspeed can run portlets developed in PHP and Perl through its ability to support multiple Web application frameworks, including JSF (JavaServer Faces) and Struts.

While it may sound sparse, that’s a big part of Jetspeed’s appeal as a fast, lightweight portal. It offers plenty of scope for custom development, while still offering all the important administrative tools required in the enterprise, such as full groups, roles and permissions management, and single sign-on support.

Currently in its second iteration, Jetspeed 2 offers a great solution for those looking to develop a highly customized portal, and who have no need for the content management or collaboration portals that a more full-featured portal has to offer.
